納布果即「巴比倫王」尼布甲尼撒二世 （Nebuchadnezzar II）。耶路撒冷在西元前586年被尼布甲尼撒二世攻陷，全城人民被俘往巴比倫充作奴隸。猶太人在幼發拉底河畔為希望重返家鄉而唱了這首歌曲。

Manrico是一名遊唱詩人，與 Leonora 相戀，而 di Luna 伯爵也深愛著 Leonora 。三角戀愛曝光後，Manrico 與 di Luna 為 Leonora 而決鬥，Manrico 打敗了 di Luna ，不過卻饒了失敗者的性命。稍後，Manrico 的母親透露原來 Manrico 是 di Luna 親弟弟的驚人的真相，當年她為了報復，打算燒死 di Luna 的弟弟，不料卻誤將自己的兒子燒死。 Leonora 因為接到誤傳，以為Manrico已死，於是決心入修道院當修女。Manrico聞訊趕去阻止，但Leonora 已被搶先一步的 di Luna 劫走，最後Manrico搶回Leonora ，兩人在被 di Luna 圍困的軍營中準備結婚。此時，Manrico 的母親被 di Luna 逮捕，在知道她即為當年燒死自己弟弟的凶手後，下令將她處以火刑。Manrico 聞訊後，趕去解救母親，唱出了這首「看那可怕烈焰」。Manrico 失敗被捕，Leonora 願用自己的身體交換Manrico 的自由，但偷偷的吞下毒藥。Manrico 在牢中安慰母親並讓她入睡後，Leonora 進來告訴他們獲得自由的消息，在與 Manrico 的爭執中毒發身亡。di Luna 聞訊前來，大怒下令將 Manrico 處死。 Manrico 的母親醒來後，發現 Manrico 已死，在瘋狂中說出事實真相後，也氣絕身亡。

佛羅倫斯富商杜拿第死了，他的繼承人們為了篡改他的遺囑，不得不求助強尼史基基。強尼史基基的女兒羅麗塔與找到遺囑的雷諾丘是一對戀人。當強尼史基基與杜拿第家人因故爭吵而準備拉著羅麗塔離開時，羅麗塔卻開始求情，表示她深愛雷諾丘，一定要父親幫這個忙，唱出了這首：「O mio babbino caro 」。
